Anne Douglas and Kirk Douglas were married for 66 years.
Anne Douglas, the wife of the late Kirk Douglas and stepmother of actor Michael Douglas, passed away at the age of 102. According to People, Anne passed away on April 29, 2021, at her home in Beverly Hills, just a week after her birthday.
Her death was confirmed by Michael through a statement. "Anne was more than a stepmother, and never 'wicked.' She brought out the best in all of us, especially our father. Dad would never have had the career he did without Anne's support and partnership," said the 76-year-old.
He added, "Catherine [Zeta-Jones] and I and the children adored her; she will always be in our hearts." He continued, "My father could never keep a secret. Anne was just the opposite, That's why I was so moved when I read their co-authored book, Kirk and Anne, in which she talked about her early life in Germany; her war years in occupied Paris; and her career before she met my father." He also stated that her book gives him "insights into their courtship and marriage."
Anne was a philanthropist and was also a member of the boards of organizations such as The Mark Taper Forum and the Center Theater Group. Additionally, the former film publicist also involved herself in making the lives of women better through The Anne Douglas Center for Women at the Los Angeles Mission and Cedars-Sinai Research for Women's Cancers.
Commenting on her passing, Los Angeles Mission's president and CEO Troy Vaughn stated, "We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mrs. Anne Douglas, beloved widow of Kirk Douglas. Together the Douglas family has been deeply involved in the Los Angeles Mission's efforts to restore the lives of our city's homeless."
He added, "More than thirty years ago, Anne Douglas's driving passion led the building of the Mission's women's center, the Anne Douglas Center for Women. As Anne, herself put it: 'If I had but one wish, I think becoming a recognized patron of homeless men and women would be it. I hope together we will be able to alleviate their plight entirely.'"
Vaughn concluded, "The Los Angeles Mission and the Anne Douglas Center is proud to uphold her legacy and tireless commitment. Rest In Peace, Anne. We love you."
Anne lost her husband, Kirk in February 2020. The couple were married for 66 years and shared two sons. Petr and Eric. Kirk met Anne after the failure of his first marriage. The couple, who married in Las Vegas in 1954 had an incredible love story.
"I often wonder what would have happened to me if I hadn't married Anne. I might not have survived without her business acumen and her finely-honed instincts. She saved me from financial ruin when she persisted in her distrust of my long-time lawyer and surrogate father, who indeed stole the fortune he told me I had. She saved my life when she refused to let me fly to New York on Mike Todd's plane which crashed, killing everyone aboard. She gave me tough love when I had my stroke and thought I would never speak or work again. Anne is selfless, compassionate, and loyal to a fault. She also has a wicked sense of humor and can make me laugh in English, French, and German," said her late husband about her.
