Mother, Trying To Save Her 10-MO Infant From Being Kidnapped, Dies After Being Thrown Off A Minivan

Brittany Walker-Martie succumbed to her injuries after being transported to a local hospital.

A mother cares for and protects her children in the most adverse situations, no matter how risky it may be. One brave mother from Arizona did the same to protect her 10-month-old infant during a kidnapping. Unfortunately, however, she succumbed to her injuries after being thrown off a minivan.

According to People,  Brittany Walker-Martie was thrown from a minivan when her son Abel's non-custodial father, Eric Maes tried to abduct him on 9 February 2021. While Maes drove away, Martie was left on the scene with life-threatening injuries. Shortly thereafter, officers arrived at the spot after they heard the domestic violence report. Immediately, the mother of two was taken to the hospital. However, she did not survive.

Describing the events, Peoria police stated, "A male jumped into the driver’s seat of her car and started driving away, with the child still in the vehicle. Witnesses observed Brittany grab onto the car as it was driving away, she was thrown from the car as it sped away from the scene."

Following the unfortunate incident, police sent out an AMBER alert to find the infant, according to People. On 10 February 2021, the infant was found in good health. A statement released by the Peoria police stated that they found him after responding to a report of an abandoned child. He was located 11 km from where he was abducted. Soon after, the authorities located Martie's car and arrested Maes from Phoenix. He was found after the authorities received a tip regarding a possible suspect sighting.

Speaking of his charges, the authorities stated that he was initially charged with one count of manslaughter. However, it was modified to "one count each of murder in the first degree, kidnapping, endangerment, and theft of means of transportation." Peoria Police Sgt. Amanda Gaines stated that there was a possibility of amendments in the charges as the investigation is still in progress.

People reported that it was not clear if the suspect entered a plea.

Meanwhile, the death of Martie has left her children motherless. Her 11-year-old daughter Prudence tearfully told reporters, "I love her so much. She was my mommy," during a public vigil. The girl added, "She was always there for us."

A friend of the deceased named Heather Giard also remembered the sacrifice made by the heroic mother. She stated that Martie "died for her son." She added, "She died trying to save little Abel."
