Janae Hairston from Ohio was accidentally killed by her father in her house after he mistook her for an intruder.

An adolescent girl, Janae Hairston from Ohio, was reportedly killed by her father early Wednesday morning because he mistook her for an intruder, Good Morning America reports. She was shot in the garage in her own house by her father who thought she was a threatening trespasser. Hariston's mother called 911 after she heard the shots and clarified that her husband opened fire which struck Hariston and led to her death. According to the Columbus Dispatch, the father can be heard on the call inquiring what his daughter was doing, and then he and her mother can be heard pleading with her to wake up. Officers arrived about five minutes after the call was received.

After the police arrived, Hairston was taken to Mount Carmel East Hospital in serious condition and was declared dead about an hour later, according to the Columbus Police Department. The 16-year-old was a junior at Canal Winchester High School. The matter will be reviewed by the Franklin County Prosecutor's office. Detectives are investigating Hairston's death, which is the seventh homicide recorded in Columbus in a week and the third in three days. No criminal charges have been filed yet for this incident.

Hairston's social media presence is that of a sweet teenage girl, with several selfies and other photos of her smiling. Several posts show her considering having a job and deciding whether she should go to college near home or further away. It is an extremely tragic incident for the family who is grieving their daughter's loss over an accident in their own home. The Canal Winchester School District is extremely saddened by the demise of one of their bright students and has informed all other families about the incident. The district released a statement saying, "We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, and our thoughts, prayers, and support are with them. We are saddened by this tragic loss and will make every effort to help students and families cope, " reports ABC News.

In a statement to families, the district stated that counselors would be available when students returned from their winter break and provided online links with resources that are more easily accessible for students and their parents as they cope with the loss. The investigation is still in its preliminary stage so the Police Department has refused to comment on the incident further. However, they are taking into consideration the increasing cases of homicide and gun violence in Frankin County.
