'Diary Of A Wimpy Kid' Actor Plotted To Assassinate Justin Trudeau After Killing His Mother

He has pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of his mother.

Ryan Grantham, a Canadian actor who starred in Riverdale and in a supporting part in the 2010 film Diary of a Wimpy Kid, is facing a life sentence for second-degree murder. He recently admitted to the murder of his mother two years ago.

The 24-year-old had further plans which fortunately weren't carried out. During Grantham's sentencing hearing last week, the court heard that he also intended to assassinate Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, per Comic Sands. Grantham began his sentencing hearing in the British Columbia Supreme Court on Monday, where he will learn how long he will have to serve before being eligible for parole.

Second-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence with a 10-to-25-year term of parole ineligibility, per Entertainment Weekly. Grantham shot his 64-year-old mother, Barbara Waite, in the back of the head as she played piano, in March 2020. Prosecutors created a picture of Grantham's mental condition at the time of his mother's murder throughout the sentencing hearings.

According to reports, the court heard how Grantham practiced the murder and recorded every step of the way, including the video he shot to confess and display his mother's body after the crime. In a statement to the police and in passages from his private diary read in court, Grantham discussed his intention to assassinate the prime minister. Grantham never made it to Trudeau's house and instead headed to the Vancouver police station to surrender.

Crown prosecutor Michaela Donnelly said there was consensus that Grantham was suffering from severe depression in the months leading up to the murder despite keeping an outward image of being well functioning, citing two psychiatric reports, per CBC

Along with increasing sentiments of self-hatred and guilt about his mother and the possibility that she had found out he had stopped attending classes at Simon Fraser University, he was also having inclinations to harm others and kill himself. He had a cannabis use disorder, according to both accounts. Donnelly said, "Mr. Grantham was seeking to save his mother from something he was going to do ... That is something different than altruism."

Donnelly argued that Grantham killed Waite in a "heartbreaking breach of trust" by showing aggravating circumstances. She added, "Barbara Waite loved her son very much, was an excellent parent and in her mind had no reason to fear him." Given that Grantham was a seasoned gun user and a previous member of a gun club, Donnelly contended that the use of a gun required a serious condemnation in the sentence.
