Dolly Parton's dog, Popeye, has proved that pets are more than just companions. The country music legend was battling depression when she considered suicide, however, she says that her dog completely saved her life, reports Amomama News. Despite her successful career as a singer, actress, and Businesswoman, Parton was engulfed by Depression. She had the most trying times in her life during the early 1980s. She says that multiple things happened during those years that completely pushed her into a loop of sadness. She even asked God for answers and considered suicide as an option if she does not find any solution.
Her dog climbed into her bed after she decided to commit suicide, signaling that she should abandon the idea. She talks about this incident in her book, Dolly on Dolly, reports News Corp Australia. “I was sitting upstairs in my bedroom one afternoon when I noticed in the night stand drawer my gun that I keep for burglars,” the book details. “I looked at it a long time ... Then, just as I picked it up, just to hold it and look at it for a moment, our little dog, Popeye, came running up the stairs.
She came back into her senses at that moment. “The tap-tap-tap of his paws jolted me back to reality. I suddenly froze. I put the gun down. Then I prayed. I kinda believe Popeye was a spiritual messenger from God.” She wrote in her book, "I cried an ocean. But I ain’t gonna talk about it anymore. I’ve got to keep some mystery."
She hasn't revealed any more details about this heart-wrenching incident. However, she does talk about her long-time husband Carl Dean, 79. They have been married since 1966 and their love has grown stronger over the years. The 75-year-old singer met him when she was only 16 and they got married in Ringgold Georgia. Parton was brought up in poverty-stricken conditions with 11 of her siblings. She used to sleep with three of her siblings on the same bed. Her house had no heating in winters and all of their siblings survived on the bare minimum since the starting. However, she did not let her background stand in the way of going ahead with her career.
Moreover, her rough childhood inspired many of her songs such as, 'Coat of Many Colors', that talks about a mother sewing a coat for her child with rags. She had very difficult experiences in her life like battling poverty and serious injuries but she never let anything break her spirit. She talks about those times as lessons and is proud of the person she is today. She has a successful career, a loving husband and her pet dog to support her through life.
