Elvis Presley met Priscilla when she was just a teenager. Though she was not interested, he did everything to impress her.
Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley were one of the dreamiest couples in the early 60s. However, their marriage was unlike any other.
Priscilla was just a teenager when she met the musician. At the time, Elvis was serving the U.S. Army in Germany. While Elvis was head over heels in love with the 14-year-old, the teenager was not very impressed with him. But Elvis was determined. He tried to sweep her off her feet with his music.
According to People, Priscilla could not believe he was trying to gain her attention. “I saw Elvis trying to get my attention. I noticed that the less response I showed, the more he began singing just for me. I couldn’t believe that Elvis Presley was trying to impress me,” wrote Priscilla. This party eventually led to their first date.
Unexpectedly, Elvis asked her out for a second date. However, the teenager's relationship with the 24-year-old did not sit well with her family. They were a little wary of why the famous Elvis Presley would want to date their daughter. But Elvis's smooth talk and charm resolved it all. Her family was left convinced that he was capable of taking care of their daughter.
Elvis was very attracted to Priscilla. She reminded him of his mother, who had passed away recently. Moreover, he also liked how young and vulnerable she was. He thought he could shape her in the way he wanted her to be. According to Biography, the musician told his friend Rex Mansfield, Priscilla was "young enough that I can train her any way I want."
"He liked soft-spoken brunettes with blue eyes. He wanted to mold me to his opinions and preferences. Fidelity was very important to him, especially on the woman’s part," revealed Priscilla.
Elvis played a huge role in Priscilla's life. He chose her clothes and even decided how much make-up she should wear. He bought her clothes and made her dress up like an adult. She also wore a lot of makeup as her partner preferred it. For a Las Vegas party that they went to in 1962, Elvis wanted his teen girlfriend to get completely dolled up. He got a makeup artist to apply "makeup so heavily that you couldn’t tell if my eyes were black, blue, or black and blue. That was what Elvis wanted." And "when I put on my brocade gown, my transformation from an innocent teenager to a sophisticated siren was complete," said Priscilla.
The couple tied the knot in February 1968. Priscilla was 21 years old and the young girl was excited to start her life with Elvis.
However, her life was nowhere close to her expectations. "He was very opinionated on what he wanted, ‘I don’t like [this] color that color. Brown isn’t good for you. Green looks horrible, color dull color with no spark to it'", revealed the Priscilla, according to The Guardian.
Soon, the couple welcomed their daughter Lisa Marie Presley in 1968. With the birth of their daughter, Priscilla saw her husband withdraw from her. "He had mentioned to me before we were married that he had never been able to make love to a woman who had a child," recalled Priscilla, as per Express UK.
The singer began seeing other women behind her back. He broke her heart by cheating on her multiple times. Despite her husband's lack of interest, Priscilla continued to dress up for him. She never allowed him to see her without makeup and did everything she could to reignite the spark that had already fizzled out.
"I should have realized I was marrying an entourage and only had a share in its leader. It had to end," she said, as reported by Country Living.
As she matured into a woman, Priscilla realized she did not have an identity of her own. "I realized that I don’t know who I am, my considerations were his considerations, my fears were his fears... I found myself revealing things that he would say to me," said the mother of one.
In 1972, she separated from Elvis hoping to find who she really was, without him in the picture. Speaking to Loose Women in 2016, the woman stated, "I didn't have my teenage years as a normal girl, obviously, so I had to adapt. So I just kind of followed what he did. I mean, you lived his life. You honestly didn't have your own life… So you really kind of lost yourself. As a woman, I didn’t really know who I was."
Despite her divorce from Elvis, Priscilla revealed she loved him dearly. She even referred to him as the "love of her life."
