Chris Watts' Eldest Daughter Fought for Her Life When She Was Being Smothered, Says Autopsy Report

The 35-year-old father-of-two, who was going to welcome a third child with wife Shanann, was convicted in 2018 for the horrifying deaths of his family members.

A Colorado father betrayed his wife and two daughters in the most horrific way possible in 2018. Chris Watts, who is known as a family killer, has now become the subject of a new Netflix show called American Murder: The Family Next Door. The 35-year-old father-of-two, who was going to welcome a third child with wife Shanann, was convicted in 2018 for the horrifying deaths of his family members.

Shanann, Bella, and Celeste's deaths sent shockwaves across the country in 2018. Initially, they were reported missing and Chris joined the search for them. However, his web of lies started unraveling soon. When the police started poking holes in his story, he confessed to killing his pregnant wife only. He said that he killed her in a fit of rage as she killed their two daughters when he asked for a divorce, according to the Daily Star

A few days later, he came clean and admitted to killing all three of them. His daughter, Bella, was 4 years old and Celeste was 3. He did not reveal how he killed them until after his conviction. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, according to Denver 7.

He later revealed that he smothered his daughters and strangled Shanann before hiding their bodies at the site where he worked. He was an oil company executive. His daughters' bodies were found inside oil tankers and his wife's body was found in a shallow grave. He is serving five life sentences.

In November 2018, the autopsy reports of the victims showed that all of them were asphyxiated and young Bella may have fought for her life. Shanann's body was found dressed in a purple T-shirt and underwear and had abrasions on the neck and the left side of her face. Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke said during sentencing that she died slowly. The lack of significant injuries showed that. She had been in the second trimester of pregnancy at the time of her death on August 16, 2018. The family had intended to call the child Nico. Chris also faced charges for unlawful termination of a pregnancy and was convicted for it.

Chris' elder daughter's autopsy report revealed that Bella wore a pink pajama-type top with images of hearts and butterflies and had underwear on when her body was found. There were signs of blunt force trauma on her jaw and lacerations and contusions in her mouth. There was discoloration on her left shoulder, and teeth impressions, and superficial bite marks on the surface of Bella’s tongue.

Rourke said that this shows that Bella "fought for her life." The youngest child, Celeste, was found in a pink and black T-shirt. The toddler was wearing a diaper and underwear. There were no visible injuries on her body. There were also substances in the children's bodies from being in the oil tanker.

There were 75 milliliters of "green-black fluid" in Bella's tummy, the toxicology report said, according to the Daily Star.

The 35-year-old family killer has reportedly resigned himself to spending his life in prison. He is on lockdown 23 hours a day and can only leave for a shower and exercise, according to People. "Nothing changes," says a source who has spoken to him in prison. "Every day is like the day before, and every day in his future will be the same as today." In his cell, Chris is allowed a bible and family photos only.

In a previous interview from inside the prison, he said that his wife may have been praying when he killed her. He drove her body and his two children, who were alive at that point to his job site, where he killed his children. His eldest daughter saw him killing her younger sister and shouted, "Daddy, No!" before her life was extinguished too.

"A day doesn’t go by — a minute doesn’t go by — where he doesn’t think about his family," the source said. "He's in a hell of his own making."

Chris had been having an affair and wanted a new start, which is why he asked for a divorce. When Shanann refused, he killed her in their bedroom, before getting rid of the rest of his family as well.
