Lisa Marie Presley Felt "Disposable" In Marriage To Michael Jackson & Says "He Pushed Me Away"| Yet His Death Devastated Her

"I always confused that manipulation thinking that it meant he didn't love me," she said. "But I understand it better now. The manipulation was a survival tactic for him."

It's been more than 20 years since Lisa Marie Presley's marriage with Michael Jackson came to an end. But the joys and sorrows she experienced in their short marriage of about two years are things she cannot easily forget.

On May 26, 1994, Elvis Presley's only child, Lisa Marie Presley married the king of pop and she eagerly looked forward to spending the rest of her life with him, according to HuffPost.

Lisa Marie Presley was 26 when she married the singer in his mid-30s. After their quiet wedding, Lisa Marie gave a statement and said, "My marriage to Michael Jackson took place in a private ceremony outside the United States weeks ago. I am very much in love with Michael, I dedicate my life to being his wife. I understand and support him. We both look forward to raising a family," as quoted by People.

Michael Jackson was someone who cast an alluring spell on millions of people across the world, and Lisa Marie Presley couldn't help fall for it, too. "He was an incredible, dynamic person," she said in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. "He had something so intoxicating about him, and when he was ready to share with you and be himself—I don't know if I've ever been that intoxicated by anything... He was like a drug for me."

Although she said she never liked public attention, she still liked being with him. "I’ve never been comfortable being front and center, honestly," she said. "Don’t like attention on me. Loved being next to him and taking care of him. I was on such a high doing that ... that it was a very profound time in my life."

But problems, including Michael Jackson's drug use, started bearing down on their marriage. When Lisa Marie was asked why the marriage came to an end, she said, "There was a very profound point in the marriage when he had to make a decision. Was it the drugs and the sort of vampires, or me? And he pushed me away."

She also clarified what she meant by "vampires" and said, "...people that are sort of spiders, vampires."

Seeing her then-husband being surrounded by a certain kind of people even reminded her of her father.

"The one thing that correlates with Michael and with my father on this subject is that they had the luxury of creating whatever reality around them they wanted to create," Lisa Marie Presley shared. "They could have the kinds of people who were going to go with their program or not go with their program. If they weren’t, then they could be disposed of."

When it came to her marriage with Michael Jackson, things got to a point where she wasn't really an indispensable part of her husband's life, which is something that most partners hope for.

"Michael wasn’t a bad person because that’s how he functioned. He didn’t know any better... I took it very personally, though. I felt I was disposable. You know? And it was the same with my father," she went on to say. "Sometimes I sit and I think there have been times when I’ve been angry at the people around him. ‘Why didn’t you stop him? Why didn’t you say something?’ Well, because if you did, you were out. It’s very simple."

She admitted that over the course of his career, he became "very good at making and creating and puppeteering."

"I always confused that manipulation thinking that it meant he didn't love me," said Lisa Marie Presley. "But I understand it better now. The manipulation was a survival tactic for him."

In 1996, Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Jackson got divorced. When the musical legend passed away in 2009, Lisa Marie Presley was left devastated, even though it had been years since they ended their relationship as husband and wife.

On hearing about his death, she said, "I was floored. Honestly floored."

A day after he passed away, she wrote in her blog and said, according to Oprah.com, "The person I failed to help is being transferred right now to the L.A. County Coroners office for his autopsy. All of my indifference and detachment that I worked so hard to achieve over the years has just gone into the bowels of hell and right now I am gutted."

She found her feelings change after knowing that Michael Jackson was no more. "After the Divorce, I spent a few years obsessing about him and what I could have done different, in regret," she went on to write. "Then I spent some angry years at the whole situation. At some point, I truly became Indifferent, until now."

Grateful for the time they had together, she said, "He was an amazing person and I am lucky to have gotten as close to him as I did and to have had the many experiences and years that we had together."
