The talk show host of Larry King Now lost his 65-year-old son, Andy King, to heart attack and his 51-year-old daughter, Chaia King, to lung cancer.
No parent is ever prepared to lose their children. They always assume that they would go before they had to see their children die but, sometimes tragedy strikes in unexpected ways. Even when we are prepared, we don't know how to handle losing the people we raised. We remember their first steps and first laughs, and to see them draw their last breath is as heartbreaking as bringing them into the world is a joy.
Talk show host Larry King, 86, recently experienced terrible tragedy, not once but twice. The father-of-five had to bury two of his kids within weeks. His 65-year-old son, Andy King, died of a heart attack on July 28, 2020, and his 51-year-old daughter, Chaia King, died after a battle with lung cancer on August 20, according to Today. The octogenarian took to Instagram to share his grief and shared a photo of his two kids, who passed away.
"It is with sadness and a father's broken heart that I confirm the recent loss of two of my children, Andy King, and Chaia King. Both of them were good and kind souls and they will be greatly missed. Andy passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack on July 28th, and Chaia passed on August 20th, only a short time after having been diagnosed with lung cancer. Losing them feels so out of order. No parent should have to bury a child," he wrote.
"My family and I thank you for your outpouring of kind sentiments and well wishes. In this moment, we need a little time and privacy to heal. I thank you for respecting that," he added.
King shared Andy and Chaia with former Playboy bunny Alene Akins, who died in 2017. The veteran talk show host adopted Andy when he married Akins in 1961. They divorced two years later and remarried in 1967. They welcomed daughter Chaia in 1969 before divorcing for the final time in 1972, according to Daily Mail.
In 2017, the then-83-year-old King shared a tribute to Akins, who passed away. "So very saddened over the passing of Alene Akins, who died peacefully with our children Chaia and Andy by her side," the then-83-year-old tweeted, according to Daily Mail. "She was a grand lady," he said.
In a 2010 interview, he opened up about his many marriages. "And you know the funny thing," King said, "I think in my life I have loved three people — married all three. The other marriages I wasn’t in love. It was the thing to do. I used to say, what if your wife called urgent on one line, on the other CNN called urgent... which one do you pick up? … I used to say CNN," he told CBS.
The talk show host has been married eight times to seven women and has three more children. He is also going to be divorced eight times as he filed for divorce from his latest wife, Shawn, in 2019. King and Shawn also have two other sons, Cannon Edward and Chance Armstrong.
The talk show host has another son, Larry King Jr. with Anette Kaye. He was married to Kaye for less than a year in 1961. However, Kaye, who was estranged from the Larry King Now host, didn't tell him about his son. King and King Jr. met after more than 30 years, according to Daily Mail.
More recently, King and his recent wife are also parting ways. "I’m sorry about the marriage. I’ll always care for my wife. But it just hit a point where we didn’t get along," he said to People.
He also acknowledged that he has been married multiple times. "I got married a lot but in my head, I’m not a marrying guy. When I grew up, nobody lived together. If you fell in love, you got married. And so I married the ones that I loved. But what I loved at 20 is not what I loved at 30 and what I loved at 30 is not what I loved at 40," he added.
