Legendary Hollywood Actor, Fred Ward, Dies at the Age of 79 | “He Could Play Such Diverse Characters”

He leaves behind his wife of 27 years and his son.

Fred Ward, the legendary Hollywood star, died at the age of 79.

Ward touched the heart of millions of people across the world with his role in Grey's Anatomy, The Right Stuff, The Player, Short Cuts, and First Do No Harm. His death was confirmed by his publicist, Ron Hoffman reports Diply.

He appeared in a number of films and television series, including a comic book adaptation of 2 Guns starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg. Hoffman wrote in an email to NPR, "The unique thing about Fred Ward is that you never knew where he was going to pop up, so unpredictable were his career choices."  He added, "He could play such diverse characters as Remo Williams, a cop trained by Chiun, Master of Sinanju (Joel Grey) to become an unstoppable assassin in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins."

Highlighting more diverse roles Hoffman added, "Earl Bass, who, alongside Kevin Bacon, battle giant, worm-like monsters hungry for human flesh in 'cult' horror/comedy film, Tremors (1990), or a detective in the indie film Two Small Bodies (1993) directed by underground filmmaker Beth B."

Fans and actors in Hollywood are mourning the death of Ward and celebrating his diverse and expansive career. John Squires wrote in a tweet, "Impossible to watch Tremors and not instantly fall in love with both Val & Earl. Fred Ward was such a pivotal aspect to the success of those first two movies, and I always held out hope that he'd be back to battle Graboids one more time. It's just not fully Tremors without him."

Actor Kevin Bacon paid his respects to the actor by writing, "So sad to hear about Fred Ward. When it came to battling underground worms I couldn’t have asked for a better partner. I will always remember chatting about his love of Django Reinhardt and jazz guitar during our long hot days in the high desert. Rest In Peace Fred."

Film Critic Chris Evangelista wrote on Twitter, "So many great Fred Ward roles, but don't forget CAST A DEADLY SPELL, which is now streaming on HBO Max. Ward plays H.P. Lovecraft! But a fictional H.P. Lovecraft who is also a private eye in a world full of monsters and magic."

Ward is survived by his son Django Ward and his wife of 27 years Marie-France Ward. According to Washington Post, the cause of his death is unknown but the statement by Hoffman stated that he wanted that any memorial donations should be sent to a Boston University lab studying chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain condition.
