Madeleine McCann’s Parents Face Another Heartbreak As Prosecutors Claim Suspect May Not Be Charged Until Next Year

The prosecutors previously claimed they had strong evidence against the suspect.

Madeleine McCann's parents, Kate and Gerry have been waiting for years to know the whereabouts of their missing daughter. Though they saw a glimmer of hope a few months back, the latest news from the prosecutors may have left them in despair.

According to The Sun, prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters stated Christian Brueckner, who was found responsible for the abduction of the 3-year-old will not be charged until next year. He claimed it was because the leads had dried up and it was unlikely that the case will have any developments this year.

''I cannot say how long our investigation will go on for but I know there will be no developments this year, in 2020. We had hoped to charge him but that has not been possible," said Wolters.

He continued, "Maybe we hope to have something by the Spring of 2021, maybe it could take longer but certainly nothing this year. We have some evidence against our suspect but it is not strong enough. We have proof that he was involved and that he killed Madeleine but it's not strong enough to charge him."

Wolters further went on to say it was important for the case to have strong pieces of evidence. "We need more evidence and more witnesses but if we don't get them then the case may drop but we hope that will not happen and he will be charged," said the prosecutor.

He continued, "So long as we have something to investigate then we will investigate but if no witnesses come forward then we will have to come to an end but at the moment I can't see this point. It may be that we have to make another appeal to see if we can get any more tips."

Wolters also confirmed that they were not in touch with the girl's parents. Previously, the prosecutor had stated that the girl was dead.

Though the investigation team did not provide evidence, the prosecutor stated, "We have re-established contact with the McCann family in writing. We, of course, really consider the fact that it is going to be very hard for the family when we tell them we assume Madeline is dead. But we can’t say why she is dead," according to the Mirror Online.

Wolters also claimed, "We have concrete evidence that our suspect has killed Madeleine," according to the New York Post.

Meanwhile, Brueckner's lawyer Friedrich Fulscher said the prosecutors have not revealed any evidence to him or the McCann family. He claimed it was not "fair" for them to be kept in the dark.

''The prosecutor has not revealed anything to us about the investigation. They are adamant but they are chasing someone who is just convenient to them," said Fulscher.

Brueckner is now serving 21 months for drug offenses in Germany's Kiel prison. The man is also being investigated over a 2004 Algarve rape and a sex attack on a beach near Praia da Luz. However, his lawyer insists he is innocent in the McCann's case.

Madeleine McCann went missing on May 3, 2007, while her family was on a vacation in Portugal's Praia da Luz. Her parents tucked her into bed, along with her siblings, at the Ocean Club resort before going for dinner with some family friends. Though the concerned parents kept checking on their kids frequently, the little girl went missing from her bed at approximately 10:00 pm.

Since then, the devastated couple has been trying to solve the mystery behind her mysterious disappearance. The parents kept up their hope of finding the girl alive for years.

In 2017, Kate stated, "Apart from those first 48 hours, nothing actually has changed since then. I think the difficult thing has always been, how will we find her?...we just have to go with the process and follow it through, whatever it takes, for as long as it takes. But there's still hope that we can find Madeleine," said the mother, according to EOnline.
