Cassandra Peterson opened up about being in a relationship with Teresa Wierson in her new book titled, 'Yours Cruelly, Elvira.'
Elvira, the Mistress of the Dark, has identified as a member of the LGBTQ+ community after revealing she has been in a relationship with a woman for almost two decades. The actor and singer, who was born Cassandra Peterson, shared details from her personal life in her new memoir, Yours Cruelly, Elvira: Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark, reported CNN. Peterson writes in her autobiography that she met the love of her life in a gym as she was working to shed weight after giving birth. She was working out at Gold's Gym in Hollywood when her partner of 19 years caught her eye. "I couldn't help noticing one particular trainer, tan, tattooed, and muscular, stalking across the gym floor, knit cap pulled so low over his long brown hair that it nearly covered his eyes," she recalled in her book, reported CNN.
She was immediately captivated. "Dark and brooding, he gave off such intense energy that when he crossed the enormous gym floor, the waters parted and people stopped in their tracks to stare," she wrote. "A typical sexy bad boy, he was unaware he was so charismatic that he garnered his own unofficial fan club." As it turns out, the person that had captured her imagination was actually a woman named Teresa "T" Wierson. Peterson ran into the train in the ladies' room and they became friends. At the time, Peterson was married to her manager, Mark Pierson, and had a child with him.
"A former body-builder, track runner, and cyclist, she was an incredibly sweet person, despite her tough exterior," Peterson wrote of Wierson, reported People. "She had the ability to make something even as mundane as working out fun, and we trained together three times a week for the next six years, striking up a close friendship along the way." Peterson was going through a difficult time after splitting up with her husband of 25 years. Wierson visited Peterson to comfort her and ended up moving in with her.
Peterson was raising her child on her own and having Teresa around was a huge relief for her. With Wierson, Peterson said the house was filled with 'laughing, cooking, singing, and dancing.' She had seen Wierson as nothing but a friend but it all changed in one night. "After coming home from a movie, I told her goodnight and suddenly felt compelled to kiss her — on the mouth. As shocked as she was, I think I was even more surprised," recalled Peterson.
Peterson was as taken aback as Wierson. She was confused and had 'never been interested in women as anything other than friends.' Peterson said she felt so confused. "I was stunned that I'd been friends with her for so many years and never noticed our chemistry. How could I have missed it?" she wrote. Peterson "soon discovered that we connected sexually in a way I'd never experienced, and after a while, it became clear I was falling in love with this beautiful, androgynous creature who'd appeared on my doorstep, like an angel, just when I needed someone most."
Peterson didn't publicize her relationship as felt the need to keep up the image of her being a straight woman. She was, after all the Mistress of the Dark, a sexy temptress for men. "As Cassandra, it wouldn't have mattered to me that people knew about our relationship, but I felt the need to protect Elvira in order to keep my career alive. Elvira has always had a thing for men, and men have a thing for her, so I worried that if I announced I was no longer living the 'straight life,' my fans would feel lied to, call me a hypocrite, and abandon me," she wrote.
After almost two decades of being with Wierson, Peterson wants to share her personal life. "I'm very aware that there will be some who will be disappointed and maybe even angry, but I have to live with myself, and at this point in my life, I've got to be truthful about who I am," she wrote. "For the first time in my life I'm with someone who makes me feel safe, blessed, and truly loved."
