Helpless Single Working Mother Of Two Charged Arrested For Leaving Children Alone While She Worked

The mother was released on bail and her children are under their father's custody.

One mother wanted to be there for her children but she also had to earn a living to feed her family. With no help whatsoever, the young woman was forced to leave her children alone. However, she could not have imagined that this would lead to her arrest.

According to The Hill, a mother from Liberty Township, Ohio, was arrested under child endangerment charges after she left her kids at a motel while she was at work. As per WFMJ, the mother identified as Shaina Bell left her daughters aged 10 and 12 at a motel room. The police arrested the woman on 11 February 2021,  after they received a tip.

The authorities found the kids after 6 p.m. When they were questioned about their mother, the older child stated that their mum would be back in a couple of hours. Shortly after, the police found the mother of two working at a local pizza shop. She told the authorities that she checked on her kids on an hourly basis while was away at work.

Despite her argument, the woman was arrested and charged. The woman was later released on bail. The children, on the other hand, were placed under their father's custody.

Meanwhile, Bell pleaded not guilty to the charges. Her case hearing is scheduled to be in April. The incident has sparked a lot of discussions at the national level.  Alluding to the case, Arizona Rep. Ruben Gallego stated, "Women are dammed if they do or damned if they don’t. Stay at home with your kids and receive government assistance and you are a leach, go to work for poverty wages and can’t get consistent sitters and go to jail.”

A GoFund Me page has also been created to help the mother through the ordeal. "This campaign was created to help Shaina and her children raise the money they need in order to secure permanent and safe housing. Everything raised will go directly to establishing a safe and permanent home for Shaina, Faith, Jai'Sean, and Jade," stated the page. The website has raised $79,919 for the mother and her children.

The news has also motivated many organizations to pressure Congress to prioritize universal child care and women's needs in the COVID-19 relief package, which includes increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour.

"The simple truth is that women, especially Black women, Latina women, Asian American and Pacific Islander women, and Indigenous women, have suffered the worst impacts of the pandemic, and they need to be lifted up in the solutions and relief you draft and ultimately pass in Congress,” stated groups such as NARAL Pro-Choice America and the Women’s March.
