'Twin Peaks' And 'The Mod Squad' Star Peggy Lipton Dies Of Cancer At 72

Some stars and their roles are everlasting. The demise of Peggy Lipton has broken the hearts of fans and celebrities but 'The Mod Squad' star will always be remembered.

We all watch television shows. However, not every show and its character has the power to capture our hearts. The late 1960s show “The Mod Squad” and the hippie undercover police officer Julie Barnes played by Peggy Lipton was surely one of those shows that caught the attention of people in the 60s.



 

According to the LA Times, Peggy Lipton, an actress, and model who rose to fame from the television show passed away due to cancer at the age of 72 on Saturday. Her death was announced by her daughters, Kidada and Rashida Jones. Her daughters told the LA Times that they were happy to have spent her last moments with her. “She made her journey peacefully with her daughters and nieces by her side. We feel so lucky for every moment we spent with her.”



 

The legendary actress began her career as a model at the age of 15. Little did she know, she would be a star soon and would be in demand. At 19, Lipton first made her debut in a television sitcom called The John Forsythe Show. Later acting in several other shows such as Bewitched, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and The Virginian. However, she shot to fame at the age of 21 when she was cast in the famous  ABC crime series The Mod Squad, which aired from 1968 to 1973.

The groundbreaking series which was the first to depict the growing counterculture movement changed her life. Soon she became "it girl" and a fashion icon of the era along with four Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. The actress eventually won the Golden Globe award n 1971 for best actress in a TV drama.



 

In an interview given with LA Times in 1993, the actress said that she was not a big fan of all the attention she was getting. "Fame really drove me into my house. I was very paranoid. I didn't like going out. I had no idea how to be comfortable with the press. I was very young. It was really hard for me."

Having proved her talent in acting, she shifted her career to singing. She earned success through her self titled album and also made her covers of "Stoney End" by Laura Nyro and "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" by Donovan. At the peak of her career, she got married to Quincy Jones, the renowned musician, and producer, later taking a break from acting to raise her daughters.

She returned to acting much later in 1990. She was took upon the role of  Norma Jennings, the diner owner on the TV show Twin Peaks. Though the original series only had two seasons, it gained great recognition and soon gained cult following. In 2017, she made appearances in a revival of the same series and also in an episode of  "Angie Tribeca."



 

The demise of Peggy Lipton has left the entertainment industry in sorrow. Several celebrities like Helen Hunt, Kathy Griffin and Get Shorty star Steven Weber paid tribute to the actress. Comedian Katty Griffin put up a tweet saying, "I’m heartbroken. I had the opportunity to work with Peggy for a few days on a film. I absolutely fell in love with her. I’ve honestly always thought of Peggy as…perfect. Honest, funny, nurturing, oh and loved some good, juicy, gossip."



 

The statement released by the family said, "We can't put all of our feelings into words right now but we will say: Peggy was, and will always be our beacon of light, both in this world and beyond. She will always be a part of us."
