After being allowed to wear the military outfit to his grandmother's vigil, Prince Harry didn't expect the Queen's initials to be stripped from his outfit.
It is already difficult to lose a loved one, but it is more heartbreaking when their memories are taken away from you. For Prince Harry, the devastation came when he wasn’t allowed to wear the Queen’s initials on his military outfit. During the vigil on September 17, he was already not allowed to wear the military uniform because he is not a working royal. However, King Charles III permitted him to show up at the vigil in uniform, while still taking away the initials from his uniform, according to Coventry Telegraph.
A friend of the prince mentioned, “He is heartbroken. To remove his grandmother’s initials feels very intentional.” According to this source, Prince Harry was almost about to wear the alternative suit he had picked out when he wasn’t permitted to wear the military uniform to avoid any ‘humiliation.’ The source also mentioned how things between the two brothers have been “uncomfortable” and “difficult” but “everybody is trying their best.” The initials, traditionally worn by those 'in service' to the monarch, were seen on Prince William’s uniform but not on his. Prince Harry did appear in Blues and Royals at the vigil along with Golden, Diamond, and Platinum Jubilee medals, Army Pilot Wings, and the Afghanistan Operational Service Medal. The last medal is a testament to his two years of service in Afghanistan.

While the brothers have been making appearances together, like their walk at Windsor Castle and the other events, there is still much to be left to reconcile between the siblings. There are still tensions and there has been “no meaningful rapprochement” from either side of the aisle. The friend also mentioned, “There have been some awkward moments this week. I definitely don’t get the sense of any deeper meaningful rapprochement or a sense that this is it: things will be mended.” On September 19, 2022, the Queen’s funeral was held at the Westminster Abbey in London, an event that could possibly provide a conducive moment for the family to be glued back together.
The monarch’s death has already brought some of the family back home. And with a wonderful note penned by Prince Harry, it is quite possible that the family may soften their hearts instead of excluding a core member of their family. The statement released on the Archewell website is a clear olive branch as Prince Harry tries to bridge the gap between them. In the statement, he writes, “And as it comes to first meetings, we now honor my father in his new role as King Charles III.” While there were many reasons for the family to have some kind of distance like the interviews and the upcoming memoir leaving royal family members stunned. But the loss of a family member is enough of a motive to pull the prodigal children home. He writes about his grandmother, saying, “In celebrating the life of my grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen—and in mourning her loss—we are all reminded of the guiding compass she was to so many in her commitment to service and duty.”

While her service has done the country a lot of good (at the expense of others), she is still a grandmother and a family member most of all. “Granny, while this final parting brings us great sadness, I am forever grateful for all of our first meetings—from my earliest childhood memories with you, to meeting you for the first time as my Commander-in-Chief, to the first moment you met my darling wife and hugged your beloved great-grandchildren,” he expresses. “I cherish these times shared with you, and the many other special moments in between. You are already sorely missed, not just by us, but by the world over.”
The world had seen the Queen carry herself with grace and dignity. “She was globally admired and respected. Her unwavering grace and dignity remained true throughout her life and now her everlasting legacy,” he wrote. Adding to this, he also decided to invoke his grandfather, he said, “Let us echo the words she spoke after the passing of her husband, Prince Philip, words which can bring comfort to all of us now: ‘Life, of course, consists of final partings as well as first meetings.’”

Concluding the statement, he writes, “Thank you for your commitment to service. Thank you for your sound advice. Thank you for your infectious smile. We, too, smile knowing that you and grandpa are reunited now, and both together in peace.”
