Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Will Not Be Allowed To Attend Queen's Funeral Reception: Report

While they were originally expected to attend the event, palace officials convinced the family to promptly uninvite the couple.

Princess Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex will not be permitted to attend late Queen Elizabeth II’s Buckingham Palace Funeral Reception. The grand state reception which was held in Buckingham Palace on the eve of the Queen’s funeral is to have only working royals, according to the Independent. This move has baffled many as Prince Harry is a family member. A friend mentioned to the Daily Beast, “It is beyond bonkers if they’re not there. Everyone is coming in from around the world to pay their respects to the queen.”

While the couple was originally invited to the event, they were later expected to not come with the argument that only working members of the royal family would be allowed. A number of guests who are not royals will be making their appearances at this event. But palace officials raised concerns about Prince Harry’s situation and promptly uninvited them from the event. The VIP reception will be attended by over 500 people including diplomats and international royals, all greeted by the newly appointed Prince and Princess of Wales, Prince William, and Kate Middleton.

The US and French presidents Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron were among those who attended the event, with both arriving in the UK the day before the Queen’s state funeral on Monday. Tensions have reportedly been going on between the royal family members since the death of their longest-reigning monarch. While Prince Hary was not originally permitted to wear his military uniform during the vigil held on September 17, 2022, King Charles III finally allowed the Duke of Sussex to wear the uniform but stripped him of the right to wear his grandmother’s initials on the shoulder pad of the uniform.

At the funeral too, Prince Harry wore his morning suit with his medals hanging from the breast pocket of his coat. While Prince William wore his military outfit, Harry, who has served for 10 years in the British Army, was not permitted to do so. Additionally, he was also not allowed to salute at the coffin, like his brother, instead, he was only expected to bow in front of it. These small ways of separating the Duke from his family at the funeral have reportedly caused existing tensions to get higher.

While the death of their grandmother has allowed the family to be in the same vicinity, it has deprived them of any reconciliation with regard to the exit from the royal family and the subsequent news appearances. Depriving him of honoring his grandmother with her initials will probably feel like a blow to Prince Harry. A friend of the prince mentioned to the UK Sunday Times, “He is heartbroken. To remove his grandmother’s initials feels very intentional.” Prince Harry was almost about to wear the alternative suit he had picked out when he wasn’t permitted to wear the military uniform to avoid any ‘humiliation.’ The source also mentioned how things between the two brothers have been “uncomfortable” and “difficult” but “everybody is trying their best.”

The outside pressure of reconciling has led the brothers to keep some amount of distance from their feud and instead they are now choosing to focus on the funeral and the events that come along with it. “They are very sensitive to how everything is happening and very much see the bigger picture, not just from a personal point of view but from the family’s point of view,” the friend mentioned. In fact, speaking of Harry and Meghan’s view, the source mentioned, “Their view is: ‘Let’s get on and do it — we’ll be where we need to be and we won’t be where we don’t need to be.’”
