"You’re going to have to turn to somebody, something — because men, they are different. They’re cut from a different cloth," his wife said.
Working hard to keep their family together has always been the Jackson family's mantra. Samuel L. Jackson and LaTanya Richardson have been through the most unique of experiences but sticking by each other for almost 50 years is the most precious milestone that they've crossed.
The college sweethearts met each other in 1970 when they were studying in neighboring institutes. At the time, LaTanya found him "flamboyant, self-involved, and emotionally detached", according to CBS News, but she was one of the first people to see all the potential that he came with. And that is exactly why, after almost 40 years years of marriage later, Samuel Jackson still puts his wife first.
They got married in 1980, according to Insider. And even though it wasn't always smooth sailing in their lives, they worked hard to overcome all the obstacles thrown their way. When LaTanya Richardson was asked what it was like to be married to Samuel L. Jackson, she said, "Oh God, oh God. It's a ride. It's been a ride. It's fun. It's sad. It's happy. It's creative. It's a conversation."
One of the lowest points in the couple's journey was when Samuel L. Jackson desperately needed help to bring his life back on track. This is when LaTanya stepped up, and with his wife's help, he went to rehab. She saw him at his worst and still stayed strong. "I credit her because she could have just taken Zoe (their daughter) and walked out and been done with me. But she didn't," he said. "That's a greater love than I will ever know. Because I don't know that I would've done that."
And Samuel Jackson never fails to show his appreciation for his wife and the mother of his child even on social media.
When tough times came around, they wouldn't give up. "No matter what: don’t let the sun go down on your wrath," Latanya Richardson told Essence. Even on nights where they may have been cross with each other, she would grit her teeth and say, "OK goodnight, I love you. I love you."
LaTanya, who never stopped believing in the love they had for each other, said, "When I think about what love is I think about when he’s away and when I think about him my whole body smiles; when I look at my daughter and she’s okay or just watch Sam and see how he really works to take care of me and her even still at 26 years old."
While Samuel L. Jackson may have seemed emotionally detached once, he is still a softie when it comes to his wife and daughter. She strengthens him in a way that pushes him to be everything he can possibly be. "I’ve always had my wife LaTanya, who’s my harshest critic," he told The Guardian.
He's a wonderful father and for National Daughter Day, he wrote on Instagram, "I’m celebrating the kid that melts my heart & makes my soul sing."
Samuel L. Jackson believes that they have an unbreakable connection and after about 39 years of married life, she said, "The secret to our success? Well, I guess we still love each other."
He told Us Weekly, "We understand the bond we have, the commonality of experiences, the commonality of joy of the theater and of our lives and of our daughter’s life, so it’s easy for us to stay connected."
LaTanya Richardson has patiently understood the man in her life and the differences he comes with. And her understanding has ensured that both of them will always have an irreplaceable place in each other's heart. While talking about what makes their marriage work, she said, "You have to have a big heart and the Lord. You can’t do this without the Lord. You’re going to have to turn to somebody, something — because men, they are different. They’re cut from a different cloth."
To be together for several decades and for them to say that they are still so in love is truly remarkable.
