Rosie O'Donnell learned her daughter is autistic when Dakota was just 2 years old. Today, she worries about her daughter's future, "I worry about my longevity because as you speak to parents of kids with autism, their main worry is what happens when they die. Who's going to love their child and understand them the way you do?" But, O'Donnell loves each moment she gets to spend with the 9-year-old. "With Dakota, I am learning to have compassion much deeper than I ever did", she said to People. The actress loves documenting her daughter and some even make it to her TikTok. O'Donnell realizes the hardships that come along with raising a child with special needs, but she also embraces the "sense of vulnerability" that comes with having a kid with autism.

O'Donnell recalls the time when Dakota demanded to talk to her birth mother, she got on FaceTime and said "Are you the Lady whose tummy I was in? I just wanted you to know I'm the kid that was in there and when I was born, my mommy held me and I squeezed her pinkie and now I am with her." Rosie revealed how this conversation made both Rosie and her birth mom cry. It took them by surprise to see the little girl, articulate such complex thoughts with ease.

Rosie made it a point to tell her everything about her diagnosis so that it can never bring her any shame and she can always wear it like armor. Today, she often finds Dakota announcing to strangers "My name is Dakota. I'm 9 and I have allergies and autism. Sometimes she'll even start to give them scientific information. She loves talking about Mariana Trench sea crabs."
