Ted Danson Left His Wife And Daughters For Whoopi Goldberg | "I’d Walk In Whoopi’s Shadow For The Rest Of My Life"

Danson had a controversial affair with Whoopi Goldberg on the sets of 1993's Made in America.

Every relationship has its own problems. However, one wouldn't expect their partner to go after another woman while being married. Hollywood actor Ted Danson did just that while he was married to Casey Coates. Danson and Coates had gone through a lot of hardships and it took a major toll on their relationship. However, the last straw was when Danson cheated on her with Whoopi Goldberg.

Danson met Coates in 1975 after he split from his first wife. Danson was truly smitten by her and soon after, they got married. However, their happy marriage hit a rough patch when Coates was left paralyzed due to a stroke during childbirth, according to AmoMama. Coates asked her husband to leave her but he stayed. "For the first month, I did nothing but cry. I gave Ted permission to leave me. I thought I was going to be a wipeout the rest of my life," she said, according to Closer Weekly.

Luckily, she recovered but their relationship was never the same. The unfortunate incident increased the gap between them. The couple that shared two daughters suffered from a lack of trust. It all became worse after Danson had a controversial affair with Whoopi Goldberg on the sets of 1993's Made in America. The couple shared incredible chemistry and they became the talk of the town. The affair became so public that there was no coming back for Danson.

“I’d walk in Whoopi’s shadow for the rest of my life—I adore the woman," said Danson at the time, according to TheThings. Soon, Danson's 16-year marriage with Coates fell apart. It ended in a $30 million divorce that became one of the most expensive divorce settlements in Hollywood at that time.

As his wife and daughters were not a part of his life anymore, Danson was keen on continuing his relationship with Goldberg. He planned to marry and begin a family with her. But their relationship took a hit when he appeared in 'blackface' at a Friars Club roast. They parted ways because of Danson's parents' disapproval, eighteen months after they began their affair.

"They made plans to wed as soon as [Ted] could get a divorce, but under pressure from his parents, he dumped Whoopi," said a source, according to NickiSwift

The couple never addressed the end of their relationship for a long time but years later, Goldberg spoke of how painful it was.

"It was real painful, and it was very public," Goldberg talked about the way her relationship with Danson ended. "And the loss of his friendship hurts a great deal. We can never go and have a soda, anywhere, I’m friends with almost every man I’ve gone out with, except this man," she said. Danson, on the other hand, revealed he was not ready to share the ending of his relationship with Goldberg.

Though he did not look forward to finding love again and getting married, the Cheers actor changed his mind after meeting Mary Steenburgen. The couple is now married for 25 years.
