On receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at the 77th annual Golden Globes Awards, Tom Hanks kissed his wife and went up on stage to deliver an emotional speech. Accepting the award, he broke down and spoke with unbridled emotion. He thanked his wife and proudly said, "A man is blessed with a family sitting down front like that, a wife who is fantastic in every way, who has taught me what love is, five kids who are braver and stronger and wiser than their old man is,” according to Time. Gesturing towards his family's table, he continued, "I can't say how much your love means to me." The actor, known for his impeccable acting skills and immaculate portrayals of characters, was overcome with emotions as he uttered words of gratitude. His wife and kids too could hide their emotions and sat with their teary eyes looking at the actor.

Though Hanks blamed the overflow of emotion on his cold medicine, it is no secret that the man truly loves his wife and his family. Married for over 31 years, Tom Hanks and Rita share a marriage that might make anyone jealous. And Hanks has never shied away from openly speaking about their incredible relationship. “I view my wife as my lover, and we have a bond that goes beyond words like wife or girlfriend or mother. I can’t imagine my life without her. I often leave notes for her near the phone or somewhere in the kitchen. I wish her a good day and stuff like that. I type notes for her using the antique typewriters that I collect — I have more than a hundred. And also, I have a habit of sending a photo report of my day to Rita. I take pictures of everything around me when she is not with me: what I eat for lunch, who I meet, what I shoot. I think she likes it,” said the Forest Gump actor, who shares five kids with Rita.

Over the years, they have been supportive of each other even when times were not favorable. In 2015, Rita was diagnosed with cancer and was scared to break the news to her husband. She was afraid of the way her husband would react to the news. However, she was blown away by the way Hanks responded. "I was so amazed, so blown away by the care my husband gave me," said Rita to The New York Times. Meanwhile, Hanks applauded the bravery of his wife and said, "All I can do is bow down before the courage of my wife,” according to Mirror Online

Tom Hanks's Gloden Globe speech is a reflection of the great love they share from their initial meeting at the set of Volunteers in 1985. “This woman loved me when I was thin and loved me when I was fat. She loved me bald and loved me with hair. This woman loves me, I know that. This is why I am a lucky man,” says the actor about his wife.
