A woman wanted to surprise her husband on his birthday. However, nothing could have prepared the couple for this shock that's shattering their marriage.
We often believe we know a lot about the person we love. But sometimes we discover truths that might shatter our world in a second. This is exactly what happened to a woman who was happily married to her husband. An intended sweet surprise turned into a shock and destroyed their peace and happiness forever.
According to Mirror Online, the woman was shocked to find that her husband was her first cousin after she surprised him with an ancestry kit on his birthday. The unnamed woman sent a letter to Slate.com's Dear Prudence podcast detailing the aftereffects of finding the devastating fact. "The results came back saying we are actually first cousins on the paternal side. This news unsettles me and has left my husband's world in tatters," wrote the woman.
The woman said through the letter that she had bought the tests as a surprise for her partner who was celebrating his birthday. The couple who has a 2-year-old son was excited to find the results. However, they were broken when they found the hard truth. The woman said that it has affected their marriage and also their little son. "His parents have been married for 30 years and my husband has always held his mother close to sainthood. He will not talk about this to me, we are sleeping in separate rooms and it is starting to affect our son," wrote the anonymous woman.
The mother of one who is deeply distressed explained in the letter that she grew up in the same town as her husband. Unable to believe what she discovered, the woman is struggling with the truth. She said that she has gone through albums and photos of their childhood together to find the secret.
She also went on to say that the truth would affect other members of their family as it meant someone had been unfaithful in their marriage. "This secret is poisoning my marriage and I am terrified it will blow up the rest of our family...My-father-in-law likes to rhapsodise how he married the first girl he ever kissed, this is going to kill him," wrote the woman.
She also went on to say that she could not even confide in her mother and sisters. The letter was read by Podcast host Daniel Mallory Ortberg and was discussed by guest Connor Goldsmith, a literary agent. The two said that they had come across people who had to face similar truths later on in life and even suggested that they leave it unless it is very upsetting to them.
